Entry 7 : Final Outcome

Evaluations for “There and Back Again”

The given theme for this project is “Visions and Wonders”.” There and Back Again" story is a metaphor for “repetitive hope” itself. The title "There and Back Again" is taken from a movie called "Lord of the Rings". The term "There and Back Again" is been there and back again literally. The story shown that the protagonist was saved by his older self which eventually he must save the upcoming event which is already occurred to him. This takes place in the depth of sea due to the facts that humans tend to fear the unknown and isolation which lies under the abyss in the depth.

The plot of the story starts with a protagonist fell into the sea after he lost a fight on the surface of the sea by some torpedo, which are the fish-torpedos, as fast water current drag the protagonist into the abyss. Upon waking up, he found himself in a dark void filled with two submarine-whale which represent enemy submarine. After a while, a bright pressure suit appears scaring the two beasts away with yet another submarine-whale, which represent ally submarine, which it shows hope for the protagonist. After the protagonist is saved, he passed out. Upon waking up again, this time he finds himself, old and yet familiar, in a pressure suit that saved him. While on the surface, another similar protagonist fell into the sea and this event kept on repeating itself until the end of time.

The story is trying to tell the audience that hope can be found even the darkest places. Showing there’s always hope in every doubtful event. It also shows that every hope has its downsides.

In design perspective, some of the elements are mostly inspired from Valero Doval’s “Aerofauna” which is a montage between organic life form and man-made object. Making a slight relation in functionality such as bird flies with wings and so does a plane. It’s quite interesting that Valero Doval’s work tend to have a vintage-styled color scheme which bring out its nostalgic-ness in his works. Which also inspired the “There and Back Again” storyline. The color used in “There and Back Again” is more likely to be dark to show the audiences the feeling of “fear” and “hopelessness”.

In audio perspective, I’ve come out a theme for this story which suit. The theme which is quite similar to The Golden Age by Woodkid. I’ve used this theme because it sounded creepy yet folk-ish. Which is great for the story due to the message to send to the audience which is “despair”, “hope” and “vintage”. The audio consists of the sound of hydrophone sound, piano keys and strings. The tools used to produce the audio are “Fruity Loops Studio 12”, to create the piano keys and “Adobe Audition”, to mix the hydrophone sounds, the piano keys and the strings. The string part came from a cello which played by myself. The string part consists of hitting the music instrument like a percussion, playing the strings in looping melody, and even making it does the “screeching sound”. During the post-processing in Adobe Audition, I’ve mixed them all together to produce a pleasant sound as possible. I’m quite satisfied with the outcome.

Finally, I’ve sewing up the audio and visuals together into one piece. Adding some panning and scaling to make it less of a slideshow instead
